Monday, June 21, 2004 Head in the Clouds Good news...no, GREAT news! A privately-developed spacecraft with a human pilot successfully launched this morning from the Mojave Desert, got at least 62 miles up (the edge of space), and then glided in for a landing. SpaceShipOne (developed in part by Dick Rutan and Paul Allen) is in the history books now, and setting the stage for commercial space travel. Many stories abound on the web. I pored over the wide range of material available at the UTC booth, watched some music (including Todd Snider and a bluegrass group), and had a tasty corn dog. And yes, it was hot. And last night I went to the second night of NightFall, featuring Ellis Hook and the always-entertaining cavalcade of friends and acquaintances that I encounter there.
